SIR GANGA RAM HOSPITAL CT & MRI DEPT. HEADED BY DR. T.S BAXI ORGANIZES 4 DAY PROGRAM “IMAGING TODAY” from 1st-4th Oct.
Imaging Today Update on CT and MRI – Head to Toe
New Delhi: Department of CT & MRI , Sir Ganga Ram Hospital organized a four day Imaging Today – Update programme on MRI and CT starting today , 1st October to 4th October 2015. This is a step towards sharing the vision and thought process in the field of Medical Imaging.
According to Dr T.B.S Buxi , Chairperson , Department of CT & MRI , Sir Ganga Ram Hospital & organizing Chairperson , “Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in India with approximately 8 % deaths occurring due to cancer in India according to the ICMR. In a recent Nielson Poll, being aware of the condition does not translate into understanding the implication. CT and MRI are used in the diagnosis of cancer and also to follow up patients on treatment.MRI has no radiation potential though CT is associated with a risk of radiation. Any radiation increases the risk of cancer and the more the radiation, the higher is the risk of cancer. The risk of developing cancer after a CT scan is approx 1 in 2000 (according to the US FDA) and more so in children, who are more sensitive to radiation. “
Dr Buxi further added , “Since increased radiation is associated with cancer, the best way to reduce radiation associated risk is to reduce radiation itself. This is the aim of every scan done in the Department of CT in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and a step in this direction is the low dose iterative reconstruction technique employed by latest CT scanner installed in the hospital. This scanner leads to significantly reduced radiation dose and in a study done in our hospital, which has been published in Journal of Biomedical Graphics and Computing 2014 , Vol4 edition . In 986 patients scans evaluated, average dose reduction of 33.2% in Thorax, 32.455% in Abdomen/Pelvis and 49.706% in head examinations was achieved . In last 5 years , more than one lakh patients who have undergone CT Scan at SGRH had 30-40 % less radiation dose .”
