Navy gets exclusive berthing facility at Cochin Port
The Cochin Port Trust (CPT) and Indian Navy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday for use of the Q2-Q3 berths at Mattacherry wharf of Cochin Port for berthing Indian Navy ships.
The MoU was signed by Goutam Gupta, traffic manager, CPT and Commodore Deepak Kumar, chief staff officer (Ops), Southern Naval Command, Indian Navy.
According to the MoU, the two berths at Mattacherry Wharf, totaling 228m of quay length, are being handed over to Indian Navy for 5 years for berthing their ships.
“Indian Navy had requested for an exclusive facility in Cochin Port for berthing their ships as their own berths are being reconstructed. In view of the national interest involved, Cochin Port examined the request and decided that the oldest wharf, Mattacherry Wharf, can be spared as they are no longer suitable for berthing of large cargo ships due to limitation of draft and displacement,” a senior CPT official said.
The CPT considers this a landmark decision in the history of the port and officials say it will go a long way to ensure the safety of the nation.
