New Delhi, 27th March, 2016

The Department of Trade and Taxes, Government of NCT of Delhi has created a record in Value Added Tax (VAT) collection this year. Total tax collection in the current financial year crossed Rs 20,000 crores mark on 25th March 2016. With a week’s time still left before March 31st, the collection will increase further. This was informed by Sh S. S. Yadav, Commissioner VAT. He stated that the VAT collection so far is Rs 2,000 crores higher than the VAT collection in the corresponding period of last financial year.

Sh. Sajjan Singh Yadav, Commissioner VAT said that Delhi has witnessed a growth of 11% in VAT collection in the current financial year which is many times higher than the growth of only 2% in the last financial year. The VAT growth rate in Delhi in current financial year is among the highest in the country. The achievement is commendable considering the fact that some of the states have registered negative growth in current financial year. VAT is the most important revenue source of Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi and accounts for more than two third of the total revenue of Delhi Government.

Sh. Yadav further said that the record growth  in VAT collection this year  has been possible due to several measures. Than tax base has been widened by adding more than 52,627 new registered dealers in the network. Information technology has been used in a big way to analyse the data and identify defaulters. Data sharing arrangements have been operationalized with central government and other State Governments including the Central Board of Excise and Customs, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Corporate  Affairs. Besides this, data sharing has been done with other State Governments including Uttar Pradesh.  An effective check has been placed on entry of Goods in Delhi through Delhi Sugam-2 form and Automatic Number Plate Reader Cameras at border points.

People of Delhi have contributed a lot in the increase in VAT collection. They have helped in identifying dealers who are doing business on cancelled or invalid registration numbers as well as those who are manipulating records to evade VAT.  This has been facilitated by  Bill Banvao Inam Pao Scheme. Over 50 dealers doing business on cancelled/invalid registration have been caught by the bills uploaded under the Scheme by people though the DVATBILL app. About 100 dealers found manipulating records have also been caught through the uploaded bills.   VAT Commissioner further said that the department is investigating these cases further and will soon launch prosecution against such dealers in the Court of Law.
